Tips to Improve Reading

  • Read for at least 15 minutes every day.
  • Reading advertisements and flyers.
  • Read a short article or blog and write a summary of it.
  • Look for news stories on the internet.
  • Learn a new word every day and write it down in a notebook.
  • Use your new words in sentences and review them every day.
  • Make flashcards with common sentences or questions and practice them.
  • Use a picture dictionary to label things you use every day and put the labels on things around the house.
  • Read signs on the street, in the store, or around town.
  • Visit the library and borrow books and magazines.
  • Read a map and learn street names in your neighborhood.
  • After you read, ask yourself “Who, What, Where, When, Why” to better understand the text.
  • Review your notes at home after every tutoring session.
