Be a Board Member (2)

No. Turning Pages SC understands that governance skills are developed overtime and that it is possible for everyone to learn these skills. Turning Pages seeks board members with knowledge in specific areas (HR, finance, events, fundraising, literacy, adult education, etc.) and then trains those members in nonprofit board management.

We offer many tools to ensure your success as a board member.

The Board of Directors and Council Advocates meet in-person every month. Meetings are in-person at our office. They are the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

Be a Learner (14)

We use three leveled sets of curriculum designed for adults by Dr. Frank Laubach.

The reading skill level of Learners are assessed by SORT (Slosson Oral Reading Test.)

Tutoring sessions last one hour each. Tutor+Learner pairs commit to one or two tutoring sessions per week until they reach 24 hours of formal instruction.

It takes 12-24 weeks (3-6 months) to reach 24 hours. Afterwards, the Learner is reassessed for skill level and may then continue into another 24 hour round or graduate from our program. The Tutor may choose to exit, take a break, or be assigned to another 24 hour round.

Tutoring sessions take place in our public partner facilities such as in a reserved room at the Richland or Lexington Library.

Yes, a 3 hour Tutor Training Workshop is offered for new tutors. It usually takes place once a month on a Saturday from 9 am to 12 pm. All Turning Pages Tutors must attend this training before they are assigned a Learner.

Yes. The session answers many questions tutors have, provides an overview of adult education, discusses Frank Laubach’s reading methods, gives some inspiration, and offers some practical knowledge you can use with Learners. You will also be provided with a training manual to keep as well as access to tutor resources, downloads and other helpful support mechanisms.

Yes, you will receive the digital copy of our Living Tutor Manual the day before your workshop. The Living Tutor Manual contains information about Turning Pages, our expectations, information about adult education, helpful tips, worksheets and QR codes for online resources.

As a tutor, you will receive a curriculum kit that contains

  • Branded Turning Pages tote bag
  • Notebook and pen for your Learner
  • Consumable books for your Learner that match their skillset in reading
  • Loaned Teacher Manual for the skill book you are covering
  • Learner welcome packet & folder

In addition to the digital and print copy of our Living Tutor Manual, tutors will be provided with downloadable resources, worksheets and forms created by Turning Pages, as well as other online resources from ProLiteracy and in the public domain. New tutors also have a chance to connect one on one with they trainer at the end of the workshop and reach out anytime afterward. You may also contact the Executive Director at any time.

We will guide you in the best practices for helping a Learner with a learning disability. Many of our Learners do have some kind of learning disability. We will suggest a variety of ways to help these Learners. In            fact, a multi-faceted approach usually works best for those with learning disabilities.

To be accepted into our program, Tutors and Learners agree to commit to 24 hours of formal instruction.

Clear expectations are set up front. If a Learner no shows two sessions without calling you to let you know up front they will be absent, they are at risk of being dismissed from the program. At this point you should let Turning Pages know this is happening.

If they no show a third session, you may decide not to continue with that Learner and be reassigned a new one.

With that said, please keep in mind that many Learners may not drive, may not use email or texts, and may not know how to use their voicemail.

We urge Tutors to be understanding and empathetic with Learners. At the same time, we also acknowledge that if a Learner fails to contact you repeatedly, you are not able to help that person and your time is not being valued.  Tutor+Learner relationships thrive on mutual trust and respect.
