About Our Programs:
Our impactful “24 Hours to Success” (Beginner) and “The Next Chapter” (Intermediate) programs, offer personalized, one-on-one instruction to help adults raise reading skills and gain confidence.
Commitment and Eligibility:
- Tutors commit to 24 hours of instruction time spread over 24 weeks.
- Eligibility requires a high school diploma, age 18 or older, and a passion for reading and learning.
- Sensitivity, confidentiality, and the ability to relate to diverse backgrounds are essential.
Tutor Workshops:
- Mandatory 3-hour training comes with Tutor 8 reference manual and covers adult learner psychology, teaching methods, and core curriculum usage.
- Free for prospective tutors, a $25.00 donation for those setting up literacy programs.
Assignments:
- Tutors are matched with learners based on availability and library preferences.
- Sessions take place at study centers within Richland Library and Lexington County Public Library.
- Tutor+Learner pairs meet once a week for 24 weeks, using provided Curriculum Kits.
