- Columbia Area Tutors (Richland & Lexington Counties)
- Aiken County Tutors
- Complete the Full Tutor Intake (emailed link)
- Attend a 4-Hour Tutor Workshop
About Our Programs:
Our “24 Hours to Success” (Foundational) and “The Next Chapter” (Intermediate) programs follow a proven Pathway to Reading: Sounds > Phonics > Fluency > Vocabulary > Comprehension. Tutors in our program provide adult learners with the personalized, one-on-one instruction they need to improve reading skills and gain confidence.
Commitment and Eligibility:
- Commitment: 24 hours of instruction time spread over 24 one-hour sessions.
- Eligibility: High school diploma, age 18 or older, a passion for reading and learning.
- Location: South Carolina’s Richland County, Lexington County, or Aiken County
- Key Traits: Sensitivity, confidentiality, and the ability to relate to diverse backgrounds are essential.
New Tutor Workshops:
- Our mandatory 4-hour orientation covers adult learner psychology, teaching methods, and core curriculum usage.
- Free for tutors who have completed intake in Richland County, Lexington County, or Aiken County.
- Once assigned to a learner, you will also receive a copy of the workshop’s Tutor 8 reference manual.
Assignments:
- Tutors choose from a list of assignments that lists a learner’s availability and library preferences.
- Your sessions are held at study centers inside Richland Library (13 locations), Lexington County Public Library (10 locations), and Aiken County Public Library (6 locations).
- Pairs meet one hour per week, using provided Curriculum Kits, until they hit 24 sessions.

- Leveled, consumable curriculum
- Teaching manual
- Learner info folder
- Journals with pen
