TIPS FOR TUTORS

Remember the feeling of closing up a fantastic summer read and wishing it hadn’t ended so fast?

Now imagine having never felt that! Your tutoring sessions can unlock that joy of reading for someone.

Here’s how you can make that happen…

1️⃣ Build Rapport
Get to know your learner! Take time to understand your their interests and goals. Relate the reading material in your Curriculum Kit or at the library to their life experiences and engage them in meaningful conversations about the content. This connection will make the learning process enjoyable and encourage their reading journey.

2️⃣ Embrace Patience
Learning to read as an adult is hard, but your support makes all the difference. Be encouraging, understanding, and celebrate every milestone, no matter how small. Your patience and positive reinforcement will boost their confidence and motivation, leading to more significant progress.

3️⃣ Make it Relevant
Tailor your lessons to their interests and daily life. Choose reading materials that align with their hobbies, career aspirations, or personal goals. Your Curriculum Kit already has a wealth of resources about adult life. But, if that isn’t enough, our council will help you tweak it more. By making their session content relevant and meaningful, you’ll ignite their curiosity and show them the practical benefits of literacy.

As a volunteer tutor, you have the power to change lives through the gift of reading. Your dedication and passion will empower adults to unlock new opportunities and explore the world through words.

Keep up the amazing work! 💪📚
