COLUMBIA SC – Turning Pages SC, South Carolina’s oldest adult literacy council,
welcomes three new board members to help advance its mission of teaching adults to
read. Sharon Ewing, Tracy Ross and Hunter Sox have joined the organization’s Board of
Directors, each bringing in unique skills and experiences.

Sharon Ewing taught for 25 years in K12 classrooms, including remedial reading at both
the high school and college level. Tracy Ross retired from Army Aviation in 2006 after
22 years of service, including a tour to Iraq and Afghanistan. Hunter Sox works for a
public affairs firm and prior to that worked for the S.C. Institute of Medicine and Public
Health in a government affairs role. All three share Turning Pages SC’s commitment to
improving lives in South Carolina.

“I am excited to join the Turning Pages SC board alongside so many passionate
individuals who are dedicated to advancing literacy in our communities!” said Hunter
Sox.
“Reading is essential to learning. Everyone regardless of age should be afforded the
opportunity to learn to read. I can’t wait to get to work and help the organization
accomplish its recent strategic plan.” Sox, a fervent civic leader, also sits on Cayce’s City
Council representing District 3
as well as the Cayce Beautification Foundation.

According to a recent report by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, South
Carolina ranks 46th in the nation for reading proficiency among fourth-graders, and
43rd in the nation for reading proficiency among eighth-graders. These facts underscore
the importance of organizations like Turning Pages SC in building literacy and
improving outcomes for adults in South Carolinians.

“Columbia, South Carolina is a vibrant and growing city. Ensuring all residents have
access to quality literacy programs is critical to its continued success,” said Lisa Cole,
Interim Executive Director of Turning Pages SC. “We are thrilled to welcome Hunter,
Sharon, and Tracy to our Board of Directors. Their expertise and passion for literacy will
be invaluable in helping us continue to raise literacy rates in the Midlands.”
