TIPS FOR TUTORS

What do you do when you’ve exhausted basic activities, and your learner is on the brink of giving up?

Here are a few unique strategies to help guide your sessions!

1️⃣ Gamification Techniques
Introduce game-like elements into your tutoring sessions to make learning more engaging and enjoyable. Incorporate educational games, puzzles, or interactive printed resources that reinforce reading skills. This unconventional approach adds a sense of excitement and can reignite a learner’s interest and motivation.

2️⃣ Multisensory Learning
Explore multisensory teaching techniques that engage multiple senses simultaneously. For example, use tactile materials and visual aids, or incorporate familiar songs and movements into the lessons. This approach stimulates different parts of the brain and helps learners connect with the content in unique ways, making the learning experience more memorable and impactful.

3️⃣ Peer Mentoring
Pair struggling learners with more advanced readers within their circles. Maybe they have a trusted sister or cousin who is willing to help them outside of sessions. Check with your Wellness Committee member if there are upcoming events to connect with other learners in our council. Create opportunities for them to connect, share experiences, and provide mutual support. Peer mentoring fosters a sense of camaraderie, empathy, and motivation as learners realize they are not alone in their struggles.

These unconventional approaches will help learners on the verge of giving up to find new inspiration, overcome challenges, and rediscover the joy of learning.

Your dedication as a volunteer tutor can genuinely make a difference in their lives.

Keep up the incredible work! 🌟📖

TIPS FOR TUTORS

What are some strategies for helping your learner overcome reading challenges?

Let’s dive in!

1️⃣ Break Down Complex Words
When encountering difficult words, break them down into smaller syllables. Sound out each part. Help your learner understand the individual sounds and how they come together to form the word. This step-by-step approach makes tackling challenging words less intimidating.

2️⃣ Use Context Clues
Teach your learner to use the context of the sentence or paragraph to understand unfamiliar words. Encourage them to look for clues within the text, such as surrounding words, punctuation, or the overall meaning of the passage. This contextual understanding aids in comprehension and vocabulary development.

3️⃣ Practice Reading Aloud
Engage in shared reading sessions where you take turns reading aloud. This practice lets your learner hear proper pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation. It also allows you to model fluent reading and offer guidance as needed.

With your patience and confidence guidance, you’re helping your learner overcome reading challenges and build the skills needed for a lifetime of reading success.

You’re not just breaking down words – you’re breaking down barriers and empowering individuals through literacy.

Keep up the fantastic work!
