TIPS FOR TUTORS
Some days are just hard and your learner will want to give up.
Here are some tips for encouraging learners who feel defeated!
1️⃣ Real-Life Applications
Help learners see the practical applications of reading in their everyday lives. Connect reading skills to activities they enjoy or tasks they need to accomplish. Whether it’s reading a recipe, deciphering street signs, or understanding job applications, demonstrating the real-life benefits of literacy can reignite their motivation.
2️⃣ Multi-modal Learning
Incorporate different learning modalities, such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, into your tutoring sessions. Engage learners by reading, listening to audiobooks, watching videos, or incorporating hands-on activities. This multisensory approach taps into their unique strengths and preferences, making the learning experience enjoyable and effective.
3️⃣ Community Connections
Help learners find ways to engage with the community through reading. Encourage them to join book clubs, attend local events or workshops, or participate in reading-related activities. By connecting them with a supportive community of readers, they will feel a sense of belonging and purpose, revitalizing their passion for reading.
4️⃣ Self-Expression Projects
Help learners express themselves through writing or storytelling. Encourage them to write personal narratives, create short stories, or even start a journal. By nurturing their creativity and allowing them to share their unique perspectives, you empower them to see reading and writing as tools for self-expression and personal growth.
As a volunteer tutor, you can inspire learners who feel defeated. By thinking outside the box you can reignite their enthusiasm, boost their confidence, and help them overcome challenges on their reading journey.
Together, you can transform their perspective and open up a world of possibilities through the power of literacy.
Keep up the incredible impact you’re making! 🚀📚
