TIPS FOR TUTORS

At Turning Pages SC, we follow the Laubach method of teaching reading, developed in the mid-1900s by Dr. Frank Laubach. This method involves a face to face, side by side methodology that brings the tutor alongside the learner in the reading journey.

For whatever reason, many of our learners may harbor anxiety around a traditional school-like setting. In our approach, tutors only have one learner on their roster while on assignment. During sessions, tutors and learners sit side by side and focus on the learner’s needs at that moment.

Here are a few reasons why this one-on-one tutoring approach is so powerful!

1️⃣ Individualized Approach
Each learner has unique strengths and challenges. Tailoring teaching methods to their learning style, whether it’s visual, auditory, or hands-on, ensures personalized support and enhances their learning experience.

2️⃣Manageable Chunks
Reading can be overwhelming for adult learners. One-on-one allows the tutor to slow down, focusing on smaller bits without the learner feeling embarrassed. You’ll have more time to break down complex words or sentences into smaller, manageable parts. And, you’ll be able to effectively reinforce visual aids, highlighting techniques, or phonics-based strategies that will help them decode unfamiliar words and comprehend the text.

3️⃣ Non-judgmental Learning
One-on-one tutoring creates a safe and non-judgmental space where learners feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. You’ll be able to truly encourage open communication and celebrate even their most minor efforts, building their confidence and fostering a positive learning experience free of embarrassment and shame.

With these impactful strategies, you’ll see firsthand the transformative power of one-on-one tutoring.

Your commitment to empowering individuals through literacy will create a ripple effect, transforming their lives and our entire community.

Keep up the incredible work! 🌟📖

Each learner comes for different reasons.
But, for all of them, courage shines through.

We can’t share their identity…
But we can share their heart!

Here’s a spotlight on just one of our learners:

“50something female is overcoming dyslexia as she works towards obtaining her GED. Despite only completing 9th grade, she remains steadfast in her pursuit to conquer reading challenges. She draws inspiration from a desire to help her grandkids succeed in school.”

All of our learners come to us with unique stories! But adults who struggle with reading all share some common traits. Isolated, each indicator may not mean anything. When grouped together over time though, a pattern emerges.

Follow along each week as we list out some common traits you’ll notice in adults who struggle with reading.
