TIPS FOR TUTORS

Learning to read is hard. Some days we just want to give up!

Here are a few great strategies for when you’re feeling defeated.

1️⃣ Storytelling Approach
Share stories of individuals who faced similar challenges in their reading journey and overcame them successfully. Highlight the perseverance and determination displayed by these individuals. Showcasing real-life examples will inspire hope and demonstrate that anyone can achieve their literacy goals with effort and support.

2️⃣ Personalized Goal Setting
Collaborate with your learner to set specific, achievable goals tailored to their aspirations. Break down their larger reading goals into smaller, manageable milestones. Are they wanting to write checks independently? Or, address their envelopes without asking for help? Focus on these small areas. Regularly celebrate their progress and remind them of how far they’ve come. This personalized approach instills a sense of accomplishment and reignites their motivation.

3️⃣ Creative Rewards System
Introduce a unique rewards system that appeals to your learner’s interests and preferences. For each milestone they achieve, offer incentives that spark their enthusiasm. It could be anything from small tokens of appreciation to engaging reading-related activities or even personalized certificates. Ask the Turning Pages Wellness Committee when they call each month for tips on unique ways to incentivize their journey. This creative approach adds an element of fun and motivation to their learning journey.

As a volunteer tutor, you can inspire and uplift learners who are on the verge of giving up. Providing support, encouragement, and motivation will reignite their passion for learning and guide them toward reading success.

Together, you can conquer any challenges that come hit! 💪📚

Each learner comes for different reasons.
But, for all of them, courage shines through.

We can’t share their identity…
But we can share their heart!

Here’s a spotlight on just one of our learners:

“A determined older male seeking to overcome the fear of reading in public, improve vocabulary, and gain a deeper understanding of written content to boost confidence and comprehension.”

All of our learners come to us with unique stories! But adults who struggle with reading all share some common traits. Isolated, each indicator may not mean anything. When grouped together over time though, a pattern emerges.

Follow along each week as we list out some common traits you’ll notice in adults who struggle with reading.
