SEPTEMBER LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

Friends,

August brings deep reflections filled with gratitude.

On a personal note, this month marks my one-year anniversary as interim executive director. It’s been a humbling journey filled with new insights, connections, and renewed hope.

We cheered as 13 new tutors completed their Tutor Workshop, bringing our trained tutor count to 39 across Richland and Lexington Counties—a significant leap from ‘0’ last August!

Our 22nd learner of 2023 joined us. Each learner represents four hours of monthly adult education and rising literacy. By year-end, we will exceed 100 hours of education pumped into the Midlands each month!

Our partnership with Lexington County Public Library, inspired by the success of our Richland Library model, is underway thanks to LCPL’s Matt Steinmetz.

Education and innovation remain our focus, with the launch of the Tutor Portal and new appointment cards in our Curriculum Kit. Our virtual Tutor Forum is tomorrow and the third literacy lab with Dr. Floyd lands on Sept. 26 at noon.

Finally, August capped off with our 55th Birthday BBQ fundraiser. We reconnected with old friends and celebrated new growth while raising nearly $1,000 for literacy.

Despite the lack of government funds, Turning Pages’ story flourishes 55 years strong, thanks to each dedicated individual. As seasons change, both metaphorically and physically, your unwavering support remains our cornerstone.

Thank you for being part of our story!

Happy Reading,

– Lisa Cole

📚 Introducing our incredible Authors for Literacy series! 📚

Meet Frank Baker, a Columbia-based author, who penned the moving book “We Survived the Holocaust: The Bluma and Felix Goldberg Story.”

This powerful narrative follows the incredible journey of two young Polish Jews, Bluma and Felix Goldberg, who defied all odds to survive Hitler’s Final Solution.

Their story is one of resilience, hope, and survival, as they navigated unimaginable challenges during one of history’s darkest times.

Their eventual emigration to South Carolina and settlement in Columbia adds a local connection to this poignant tale. Join us in honoring their memory and stories of courage.

Learn more about the book here: www.wesurvivedtheholocaust.com

Stay tuned as we introduce more remarkable authors who were part of our Authors for Literacy event on August 26!

All of our learners come to us with unique stories! But adults who struggle with reading all share some common traits. Isolated, each indicator may not mean anything. When grouped together over time though, a pattern emerges.

Follow along each week as we list out some common traits you’ll notice in adults who struggle with reading.
