Literacy SC is seeking dedicated individuals to join our Board of Directors.
As a member of our 15-seat board, you will help guide our mission and ensure our success.
Board Responsibilities:
- Monthly Meetings: Attend 12 meetings per year (typically every 3rd Wednesday at 6:30 PM).
- Subcommittee Work: Contribute to either the internal or external subcommittee each year.
- Special Events: Champion, show up to and support Literacy SC events.
- Sustainability: Help promote the long-term success of Literacy SC.
Key Duties:
- Vision and Mission: Set and uphold our vision, mission, and values.
- Vision: We believe in a world where anyone can move up and ahead through the power of reading.
- Mission: We teach adults and families practical skills in reading, writing and math to build confidence in daily life.
- CEO Oversight: Select and evaluate the CEO’s performance.
- Strategic Planning: Engage in organizational planning and development.
- Financial Management: Ensure strong oversight of financial matters.
- Fundraising: Give what is meaningful to you while supporting fundraising efforts and resource development.
- Program Monitoring: Assess the performance of our programs and services.
- Public Advocacy: Enhance the public image of Literacy SC.
- Self-Assessment: Regularly evaluate the board’s own performance.
Individual Responsibilities:
As a board member, you will:
- Understand Literacy SC’s vision, mission, policies, and financial status.
- Review financial statements for effective oversight.
- Advocate for Literacy SC across the state and help secure necessary resources.
- Leverage your networks to foster collaboration.
- Make financial contributions that are meaningful to you when possible.
- Identify personal connections and introduce us to those that can enhance our reputation.
- Prepare for and actively participate in monthly board meetings.
- Join the internal or external board subcommittee each year to support board initiatives.
Additional Duties:
- Follow our bylaws and policies for effective governance.
- Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update as needed.
- Disclose any conflicts before and during meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality to protect our reputation and participants’ privacy.
