Responsibilities of the Board
We are seeking passionate and committed individuals to join our Board of Directors and help us achieve our mission. As a nonprofit Board Member, you will play an important role in governing and leading our organization, and ensuring that we fulfill our responsibilities to our stakeholders.
You will work collaboratively with other board members and staff to set strategic direction, monitor organizational performance, and advance our mission through fundraising, community engagement, and advocacy.
Our Board of Directors:
- Meets up to 12 times per year (3rd Wednesday at 6:30 pm)
- Contributes to subcommittee work as needed
- Shows up for special events
- Promotes the sustainability of the organization
As the highest leadership body of Turning Pages SC and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the board is responsible for:
- Setting and promoting the vision, mission, and values
- Selecting, monitoring, and evaluating the Executive Director’s performance
- Engaging in strategic and organizational planning
- Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
- Engaging in fundraising and resource development
- Approving and monitoring the overall programs and services of Turning Pages SC
- Enhancing the public image of Turning Pages SC
- Assessing its own performance as the governing body of Turning Pages SC
Responsibilities of Individual Board Members
As a board member, you will be expected to:
- Know Turning Pages SC’s vision, mission, policies, programs, and financial standing
- Read and understand financial statements to ensure effective fiduciary oversight
- Serve as an active advocate and ambassador, and help secure the financial resources and partnerships necessary to advance our mission
- Leverage your connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action
- Make a meaningful personal financial donation to demonstrate your commitment
- Help identify personal connections that can benefit fundraising and reputational standing, and can influence public policy
- Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings to contribute to the decision-making process
- Participate in subcommittees to support the work of Turning Pages SC

Other responsibilities of nonprofit board members
- Follow bylaws, policies, and board resolutions to ensure effective governance and decision-making
- Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary to ensure transparency and avoid any potential conflicts of interest
- Disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings to ensure that the board can make informed decisions
- Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters to protect our reputation and stakeholders’ privacy.
