Be a Volunteer Reading Tutor

Ready to be a volunteer reading tutor? Follow these easy steps:

  1. Complete the Tutor Enrollment Form
  2. Attend a 4-Hour Tutor Workshop – Complete the enrollment form to be put on our wait list to be alerted for the next workshop.
  3. Select an assignment from the monthly assignment e-blast

Two Reading Tracts

Our Foundational and Challenger tracts both follow the Roadmap to Reading: Sounds > Phonics > Fluency > Vocabulary > Comprehension. Tutors self-select assignments and meet with their adult learner for 24 one-hour weekly sessions. Our fully packed Curriculum Kits help tutors provide the personalized, one-on-one instruction learners need to improve reading skills and gain confidence.

Commitment and Eligibility:

  • Commitment: 24 one-hour weekly sessions. (6 months minimum)
  • Eligibility: High school diploma (18+) and a passion for education.
  • Location: South Carolina’s Richland County, Lexington County, or Aiken County
  • Key Traits: Sensitivity, confidentiality, and the ability to relate to diverse backgrounds.

New Tutor Workshops:

  • Mandatory before picking up an assignment.
  • Covers adult education basics, curriculum kit use, and tutoring tips.
  • Free for enrolled tutors in Richland County, Lexington County, or Aiken County.
  • Once assigned to a learner, you will also receive a copy of Tutor 8 reference manual.

Assignments:

  • Assignment e-blasts are sent over email each month.
  • Tutors self-select which assignment they want.
  • Sessions are at study centers inside Richland Library (13 locations), Lexington County Public Library (10 locations), and Aiken County Public Library.
  • Pairs meet one hour per week until they complete 24 sessions.
